What is authentic materials and what are the benefit of its in teaching EFL?

Without the authentic materials teaching in the EFL’ class will never successful. In my opinion, authentic material can truly make the positive impact in ESL teaching. There are many definitions for authentic material but I want to present an easy to understand definitions by Peacock, 1997 who says that “authentic materials are materials that have been produced to fulfill some social purpose in the language community”. I do agree with this definition and I know that the authentic materials will be useful in teaching English class. As the EFL’s teachers we can not only use authentic material to teach vocabulary and grammar structure but we can teach students the foreigners’ social context from the materials like picture, postcards, stamp, videos, magazines and etc.

Authentic materials are any materials that exist in the real world for native speakers in English.
Examples of authentic materials include: Newspapers and advertisements, Maps and directions,
Prescriptions and instructions, Written notes and messages, etc.
Teacher uses authentic materials for helping their students get closer to the real world of communication.
Authentic materials also lead the classroom more interesting and flexible.

Authentic material is the material that the native speakers create to use in their daily life.
It is created for real context so it contains real language of the native speakers.
Using authentic materials in the classroom is very interesting.
Authentic materials are very useful to motivate students including me. Students will be more focused and interested.
There are a lot of sources of authentic materials that’s suitable for students such as magazines, television programs, radio, handbill, movie ets.

Authentic material is the real object that is benefit for teaching.
Without the authentic, the learning is not happen.
The kind of this material include newspaper, map, menus, travel brochures, etc.
Students can learn effectively from these because they can see and touch from
the real thing. So I think it is very useful for applying my teaching in the future.

In teaching English for non - English speakers, authentic materials should refer to something that using the target language to communicate for example; video or audio from native speakers speaking, Times Magazine, News, CNN, BBC, etc. These materials benefit to EFL and ESL students because they will get to hear or watch and be familiar with the language using by the native speakers. Some students like watching videos of native speakers speaking and they try to imitate the way native speakers speak in the video.

To sum up the advantages, my teaching colleagues feel that authentic materials:help prepare learners for the ‘real’ world of communication; guide learners toward the language they need for their particular context; motivate learners to communicate, because they help make communication ‘real’.

We can choose both printed and non-printed material.
We can find in the library or on internet.

Authentic materials is the original things that native speakers apply in their daily life without adding or cutting anythings such as news, newspaper, videos, songs, books and etc.
The benefit of AM in ESL is to provide students the real objects in everyday's life of native speakers.
The learners will soon be familiar with the target language via observing and using authentic materials.

There are so many kinds of authentic materials to teach EFL / ESL students. I myself as a Thai student who learn English as a second language like to use news, review of anything I want to know, interview, songs, etc as authentic materials to learn English.

Authentic materials are everthing that lanuage owner use in daily life. They aren't made for using in educational corectly but they are used in tesching English for ESL or EFL students. When the authentis materials are used for Teaching English, ESL/EFL learners will see functions of lauage that are used in the owner's real life. And the students will learn about the owner's traditional also.
